The second team in our interview series with DDAccelerator participants comes from the Czech Republic and the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) at Czech technical University in Prague. Meet the minds behind CaseIndex – an AI-powered legal research tool helping legal professionals find relevant case law with greater accuracy and speed. CaseIndex is built by a talented group of innovators: Dorian Charbulák, Kryštof Holý, Jan Wenzel, Jan Illetško, Jakub Horák with support from Tomáš Samek as an investor. As part of Cohort 1 of the DDAccelerator, they're redefining how legal information is accessed and applied in practice.
Can you describe to me what CaseIndex's product or service is?
CaseIndex is an AI-powered legal research tool designed to help professionals – such as lawyers and tax advisors – find relevant case law efficiently. Unlike traditional keyword-based searches, CaseIndex uses a smart search engine with semantic understanding to surface cases that competitors might miss. The core focus is on precision and quality rather than generative AI, which tends to introduce hallucinations.
Your team is already quite large for a startup – how did the people behind CaseIndex come together, and what’s the story behind your collaboration?
Dorian Charbulák: The idea for Caseindex originated from a long-term pain point of a legal office owner, who then became an invaluable teammate. The project came to life to solve the inefficiencies in legal research, with my contributions in IT network, technical and project expertise, and my cofounder’s in legal domain expertise and user view. Our team has engaged in validation efforts, speaking with professionals to refine the product.
Have any users tested the product yet? Who are your main customers, and how does it benefit them?
The primary users of Caseindex are legal professionals, particularly tax advisors and lawyers, who need to efficiently search through case law. By using Caseindex, they can reduce research time significantly – potentially by 50% – while ensuring they find relevant cases that might be overlooked by competitors using traditional search methods.
You mentioned that CaseIndex is an AI-powered tool. What were the biggest challenges you faced when training your models to understand legal language and the reasoning in case law?
Legal texts have precise wording, nuanced meanings, and domain-specific terms that require specialized models. Unlike general text, case law involves legal principles, precedents, and implicit logical structures, making it harder for AI to draw connections. Moreover, high-quality annotated legal datasets are almost non-existant.
How do you see traditional legal research tools and in what ways does CaseIndex take a different approach?
Traditional legal research tools often rely on Boolean or keyword-based searches, which can be inefficient because:
- they return large volumes of results without semantic ranking,
- they require exact phrasing, leading to missed relevant cases,
- or they lack an understanding of legal reasoning and context.
CaseIndex differentiates itself by using semantic search, allowing users to find legally relevant cases based on meaning rather than specific keywords. This improves precision, reduces research time, and helps legal professionals uncover insights that traditional tools might overlook.
From what I understand, you’re currently focused on Czech law. Do you see potential to expand beyond the Czech legal market?
Sure. We are actively working on it.
If you're open to partnerships, what types of collaboration would be most valuable for CaseIndex right now?
We’d like to broaden our partnership seeking with large legal offices, tax advisory firms, or preferably even gov institutions.
And when it comes to collaborations or support – what are you currently looking for?
Biggest topic for us today is of course funding. We are actively approaching potential investors.
What are your main expectations from DDAccelerator participation?
Faster MVP launch thanks to expert mentorship on project execution. Networking with investors and Brand visibility.
How would you evaluate your experience in the DDAccelerator? Has it led to any major shifts or improvements in your product or service?
Dorian Charbulák: The most important part of DDA for me, is the mentorship provided. Since the beginning of the programme, we’ve had two events that led to us needing crisis management. Having a mentor that actively tracks your progress and is there for you, is invaluable.
A big thank you to the CaseIndex team for sharing their journey with us – we’re excited to see how your tool continues to evolve and impact the legal tech space!
The DDAccelerator will soon open applications for its third (and final) cohort – a great opportunity for anyone developing an innovative project in ICT.
Whether you're building a tech product or just starting to shape your idea, this is your chance to bring it to life with the help of expert mentors, hands-on workshops, and a supportive community.
Stay tuned – and don’t miss your moment to shine!
